Re: exploring local fishkeeping communities
I had an online chat with someone earlier and stumbled upon a Sgt Peppered Cory Lonely Hearts Club band - who knew? It got me thinking, since many of us here are passionate about fish and fishkeeping. But how many of you have local buddies who share your enthusiasm?
I used to live in a city with ...

Re: considering geophagus: is it right for you?
When it comes to South American cichlids, I've learned it's generally better to stick with just one species of bottom dweller per tank, unless you're working with a massive tank - we're talking way bigger than my 55 gallon.
I'm listening, but I'm still stuck with the substrate issue, and my ...

Re: Getting started with a walstad aquarium
Walstad tanks are truly wonderful if you do them right. I highly recommend reading Diana Walstad's book, Ecology and the Planted Aquarium - it's a game-changer. As a microbiologist, she brings a unique perspective to aquarium-keeping. I've found her method fascinating, although I admit it reads ...

Re: Getting started with a walstad aquarium
I really appreciate all the advice and I'll definitely keep you updated on my progress. I've already added Dkento4e's book to my wishlist on Amazon - it's not too pricey and I'm always up for learning more about aquariums.

Re: Getting started with a walstad aquarium
I'm glad I could share some insight. I've been reading about anaerobic buildup and it's pretty fascinating. Apparently, it can cause some serious damage to plant growth if not managed properly. I've been trying to figure out what's going on with my plants and I think it might be a combo of both ...

Re: Getting started with a walstad aquarium
Thanks I'll look into those plants. I'm curious, what's your 90L stocked with, fish-wise?

Getting started with a walstad aquarium
Hey scapers, so I'm planning to set up a walstad aquarium and I've done some research. I've got a rough idea of the equipment I'll be using - the UNS 60U tank, Twinstar C Series lights, and a generic HOB filter for filtration. Thinking of adding some shrimp, and maybe some embers or rice fish ...

Re: Black lily leaves: care and troubleshooting
Update: So I've got a bit of a reversal on my hands - the lily was bouncing back, and then out of nowhere, it starts shedding leaves again. Same symptoms, same appearance. This time, though, I was able to pinpoint a potential cause: my H2O2 treatment for staghorn algae from yesterday.
It seems the ...

Re: Black lily leaves: care and troubleshooting
"I'm curious, how close did you place the root fert tab to the lily? Was it right up against the roots or a bit of a distance away?"
That's a solid axiom.
