Play sand's inert if it's pure silica, but some brands have dust or clay. That's what clouds the water. Rinse it in small batches with a colander, not just a hose. Takes longer, but works better.

I've got 3 Electric Yellows, one of which is in quarantine due to illness. I'll try to get a pic of my setup when I get home from work, using my smartphone. They don't come out in the light, they just stay in their caves. They're also super scared of me, I mean they'll hide in their separate cave the moment I come near. I usually keep the tank light off for 20 hours a day, but some sunlight still gets through the blinds, so it's medium light in there ...
